GATE 2027 Notification Out: Key Dates, New Papers & Syllabus Changes

GATE 2027 notification key dates and syllabus changes

IIT Madras released the official GATE 2027 notification on 20 July 2026 — and this cycle comes with more actual changes than most years, not just updated dates. If you're planning to sit for GATE next February, here's everything confirmed so far.

Key Dates

  • Notification released: 20 July 2026, at gate2027.iitm.ac.in
  • Registration opens: 14 August 2026
  • Registration deadline: 21 September 2026 (without late fee), extendable to 30 September with a late fee
  • Exam dates: Spread across six days — 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21 February 2027
  • Conducting institute: IIT Madras

What's Actually New This Year

Unlike most GATE cycles, which mainly just update dates, 2027 brings real structural changes:

  • A brand-new paper: Robotics and Automation (RA) has been added, bringing the total to 31 test papers, up from 30 in previous years.
  • Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) is no longer a standalone paper. It's been folded into the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper as a sectional option instead.
  • The syllabus has been revised for the first time in five years, with specific changes to the sectional paper codes under XE (Engineering Sciences), XH (Humanities & Social Sciences), and XL (Life Sciences).
  • Registration now requires a verified DigiLocker account, along with facial recognition/verification during the application process — a notable shift from previous years' simpler registration flow.

Why the Syllabus Revision Matters

A five-year gap between syllabus revisions is unusually long for GATE, which means the changes this cycle are likely to be more substantial than a typical year-to-year tweak. If you've been preparing using notes, mock papers, or a previous year's syllabus PDF, it's worth specifically cross-checking your paper's exact syllabus against the newly released version — don't assume last year's structure still applies section-by-section, especially if you're in XE, XH, or XL.

Score Validity

A useful detail for planning ahead: your GATE 2027 score remains valid for three years from the date results are declared, for the purposes of PG admissions. This gives some flexibility if you're weighing whether to apply for M.Tech programs immediately or after gaining some work experience first.

What to Do Right Now

  • Create your DigiLocker account early — don't leave this until the registration deadline, since it's a new step this year and worth testing well in advance.
  • Download and read the official syllabus PDF for your specific paper directly from gate2027.iitm.ac.in rather than relying on a previous year's copy.
  • If you're in Engineering Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, or Life Sciences, pay particular attention to the sectional code changes — these affect how your specific combination of topics is structured.
  • Registration opens 14 August 2026 — mark this date specifically, since previous cycles have seen server load issues in the first day or two after opening.
